Chelsea Lowes
Chelsea Lowes is a 2009 Sea Grant Knauss Fellow working as the NOAA Ecosystem Research Program (ERP) Coordinator. Originally from Northern Michigan, she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Chemistry from Lake Superior State University and her Master’s in Biological Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her thesis work examined the ability of natural Lake Michigan phytoplankton assemblages to use organic phosphorus sources such as glyphosate – which is the active ingredient in agriculturally applied herbicides – for growth. Her studies have included limnology, environmental systems, chemical hydrogeology, GIS mapping, and all things chemistry. She has also worked for multiple non-profit environmental conservation organizations. Outside of work she enjoys traveling, reading, SCUBA, and anything involving the great outdoors.
